tungsten tube is a great way to add weight to flies, especially when the fish are at or near the surface. They are super heavy and sink fast. They are also very versatile and can be used in a wide range of fly patterns. Tungsten loaded tubing is an excellent alternative to lead core. It is safe and allows fish to be caught without the need to destroy fish stocks. It can be covered with a variety of materials to produce a variety of interesting body shapes.
Tungsten has the highest melting point of all refractory metals and a very high density. It is static and resists attacks by oxygen, alkalis and acids. Pure tungsten is very difficult (though not impossible) to machine due to its extremely hardness and the fact that it is ductile above a certain temperature, known as the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature.
In addition to its extreme strength, tungsten has the highest conductivity of all metals, even when it is cold. This makes it well suited for filaments, heating coils and other thermal applications. Tungsten is also ideal for x-ray tubes and has been used as an element in glass-to-metal seals, supports, electrodes, cathodes and anodes.
The Navy’s deployed radar systems depend on vacuum tubes that use thoriated tungsten filament cathodes to amplify microwave signals. These tubes, however, degrade over time, causing the emissivity to decay. Efforts to develop processes that will allow the Navy to build and sustain these systems until 2045 or beyond could save billions of dollars in replacement costs.
